Drill: 'Watch' Your Putting
This is a great drill for those of you who have a hard time controlling the putter face from a directional standpoint, and for those who have a hard time getting the golf ball to roll consistent distances, especially on longer putts.
Too much club face rotation (excessive twisting) can be a nightmare to put and can put an inordinate amount of stress on you. When three-footers become challenging it conversely increases the demand for longer distance lag putting. This drill can help improve both aspects of your putting.
Try and envision that the back of your left hand and the face of your watch (if you don’t wear one, imagine!) remain pointing directly at the target through the stroke and when it is complete. This will ensure the putter face continues to point down the intended target line, three footers are fixed, check! Maintaining the same shaft lean through the stroke that you create in your address position will ensure that the loft on the putter will remain consistent throughout the stroke. The roll on the golf ball will improve and thus so will the predictability of distance control, check!
