These 56 Golfers Made Their Own Texas Legends at Briggs Ranch

Closing out the Briggs Ranch spring season just ahead of this summer’s greens renovation, the 2022 Texas Legends Member-Guest was held at the San Antonio club on April 20 – 23.

The field was welcomed on Wednesday with an optional Points vs Quota game and an all-out rustic welcome dinner prepared by Chef Josh and team: Bandera quail poppers, Galveston Bay crab cakes, wood-grilled cowboy ribeye steaks, a variety of side dishes, and a Texas-sized cheesecake dessert.

This year, with the addition of four new casitas finalized in March, all 56 players were able to stay on site and make the most of the evening entertainment and camaraderie only found at arguably the most casual of all Dormie Network clubs.

All five flights started Round 1 better ball match play at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning, with the goal of making it to the shootout. After two official rounds and a 9-hole team skins game, players had their pick of the Chuckwagon Dinner buffet with a traditional hog roast (one smoke and one rotisserie over an open fire), smoked brisket, beef short ribs, green chili mac, Texas peach crisp, and those bourbon-flamed donuts you’ve been hearing about.

Friday morning’s hangovers were cured with bloody marys (or Micheladas) and surprise chair massages on the driving range. Players fought their way through a competitive Round 3 and challenged to an all-the-fixins TexMex lunch from the mobile bar and taco truck.

Friday afternoon brought Round 4 play, a Par 3 Competition, then live music entertainment from the Mark Odom Band and the annual Texas Legends Dinner featuring a Galveston Bay shrimp boil, oyster roast and raw bar, pitchfork steaks, jambalaya, gumbo, and a trio of desserts (Texas beignets, flan, and chocolate truffle cake).

Saturday began bright and early with a truly Texan brunch buffet on the terrace, followed by Round 5 match play at 9 a.m. The shootout was fierce, and ultimately won by the father-in-law/son-in-law duo Russell and Huskinson for the second year in a row.

All players walked away with impressive tee gifts: bottle of Dormie Network-branded bourbon, a flask, and Maui Jim sunglasses with straps. Flight winners also earned Briggs Ranch-branded leather duffel bags.
